Our farm was really started with the goal of food security in 2020 after being laid off right before the pandemic started. With the loss of income and grocery store shelves being emptied, we quickly realized that relying on large corporations to feed us was an illusion.
After a couple of years of gardening and raising a few chickens in our backyard, we sold our home in Phoenix and moved onto 5 acres in Paulden. Rabbit hole after rabbit hole, our garden expanded into a homestead, and our homestead expanded into a farm. We now breed and raise pigs, chickens for eggs and meat, turkeys seasonally (and some that roam the farm just for fun). We have a small orchard growing out and big plans for vegetables in the coming year.
Our goal is not just to provide food for our local community but to provide the best-tasting food the big corporations just don’t seem to care about. Our main focus is raising our Meishan pigs, a premium pig that provides some of the best pork we’ve ever had. This year we will grow a larger portion of their food right here on the farm, with hopes of growing 100% of it in the future. We raise our pigs as naturally as they can be, with no drugs, vaccines, or antibiotics. Just fresh air, warm sunlight, clean water (when they let it be) and plenty of room to roam. We also teach others to do what we do, and if we eventually put ourselves out of business because we’ve helped so many people raise their own food locally, we’d happily retire or start some other project. Food security isn’t just our goal; it’s our mission.
