As a vital part of the local economy, the mission of Prescott Farmers Market is to support and expand local agriculture, cultivate a healthy community and increase access to affordable local foods.

Prescott Farmers Market (PFM) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, operating a year-round market on Saturdays. Only farmers that grow their own produce within Arizona, with preference given to Yavapai County growers, and local artisans that include locally grown ingredients in their goods, are eligible to sell at the market. By maintaining these standards, PFM provides a market through which small-scale producers can sell their goods and community members can access fresh, local foods. 

This position is based in Prescott, Arizona. PFM employees accrue up to 80 hours of paid time off (PTO) annually and receive three paid holidays. After six months, PFM matches up to 3% of employees’ contributions to their SIMPLE IRA account.

Assistant Compost Manager

PFM seeks an Assistant Compost Manager to work 20-25 hours/week to support its Prescott Community Compost Project.


The Prescott Community Compost Project (PCCP) is one of Prescott Farmers Market’s vibrant community-focused projects. The goals of the PCCP include educating community members about the benefits of recycling kitchen scraps, creating high quality compost to distribute to Prescott gardeners, diverting kitchen scraps from landfills, and building community during the on-site work days where volunteers participate in the composting process.

The Assistant Manager will be trained by the Compost Manager on the best management practices associated with processing kitchen scraps into compost on an urban compost site. After a training period, the Assistant Compost Manager will be expected to periodically facilitate and supervise volunteer work sessions and will be responsible for collecting kitchen scraps and transporting them to the compost site. Occasionally, extra site visits will be hosted as educational events, field trips, and workshops. This position requires time spent on physical and hands-on tasks, however, the social interactions with the community are the foundation of this project. 

Compost staff must be available on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays:

Fridays: approximately 7:00am – 1:00pm
Saturdays: approximately 5:00am – 2:00pm (April-October) and 7:30am – 2:30pm (November-March). Market days in the summer can be 10-hour work days.
Sundays: approximately 7:00am – 1:00pm


Volunteer Work Sessions: Facilitate on-site work sessions on Friday and Sunday mornings, where compost piles are built, turned, and sifted. This includes setting up the site for the work session before volunteers arrive and making sure first-time volunteers complete a liability waiver. 

Saturday booth at Prescott Farmers Market: Supervise food scrap collection at the Saturday farmers market. This includes transporting the required materials (buckets, sawdust, totes, tent, etc.) from the compost site to the market location, and setting up/breaking down the compost collection booth. Work with and manage volunteer(s).

Program Sustainability: Assist in grant research and writing to support the economic sustainability of the composting program and organization as a whole. Maintain detailed digital records of volunteer hours, tons of food scraps collected, etc. Conduct outreach about the program, including volunteer recruitment, social media, presentations, etc.

Project Maintenance: Assist the Compost Manager with maintaining the compost site so that common issues (odor, pests, etc.) do not become an issue for this neighborhood compost site. Pick up kitchen scraps from participating community partners once a week. This requires the use of a truck and possibly trailer. Pick up wood shavings from a local wood shop periodically. Monitor compost piles and record observations on a tracking sheet. Stay educated about best management practices for community compost sites.


  • Composting experience and/or education
  • Customer service experience
  • Handy with tools and able to perform basic repairs
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds 
  • Willing and able to wake up early (5am in the summer!)
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with team members, delegate tasks, and problem solve
  • Self-directed and motivated to complete tasks
  • Attention to detail
  • Able to effectively work with and effectively communicate with people of various backgrounds, beliefs, and experience levels
  • Commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship

  • Spanish/English Bilingual
  • Gardening experience
  • Experience towing/backing up a trailer
