Tortuga Flats Pirate Pickling Company is an “all hands on deck” pickling operation. Frank and Brenda Whiteside, their son Lanny, and his wife and daughter are all involved in some aspect of the business. Lanny is responsible for growing all of the cucumbers, peppers, jalapeños, cayenne peppers, garlic and herbs for their delicious pickles. Tortuga Flats Farm grows 8 varieties of hard-neck garlic and row upon row of cucumbers. Frank is in charge of the actual pickling as well as marketing, while Brenda keeps records for the business.
Frank and Brenda settled in Paulden 3 years ago when they moved from Minnesota to be closer to their son. Lanny’s dream was to have the whole family living on a farm together and with a lot of hard work, they’ve made that dream come true. The Whiteside Family is a perfect example of a processed food vendor “walking the walk.” Everything in their pickles (save the vinegar) is grown by their loving, hard-working hands. The Whitesides grow a great deal of other crops for themselves in addition to the pickling produce. When Frank’s not on his feet 12-hours a day, 7 days a week pickling peppers and cucumbers, you’ll find him fishing.
