Broken Horn D Ranch is new to the Prescott Farmers Market but has been operating in Prescott since they moved here in 2002. Kim McElroy and Dave Pawel run every aspect of their 200 head cattle operation. Their 150-acre headquarters is in Williamson Valley with an additional 13 parcels of state and privately leased rangeland totaling 3000 acres around the Prescott area.
Kim and Dave started their cattle operation from the ground up. Previous to Prescott, they lived in New River. Kim was training horses professionally and leasing cattle to train cutting horses and working cow horses and Dave was team roping. Dave bought 2 heifers to practice roping, then brought them to a friend’s bull and two cows turned into four. They bought another cow and a bull and never looked back. When Anthem was created and New River became more urban, Kim and Dave relocated to Prescott seeking a rural life.
Broken Horn D Ranch cows are 100% grass-fed. The ranch is one of the only USDA process-verified grass-fed certified ranches in the state. According to the USDA,”The grass-fed marketing claim standard requires that animals be fed only grass and forage, with the exception of milk consumed prior to weaning. Animals certified under this program cannot be fed grain or grain byproducts and must have continuous access to pasture during the growing season.” Kim is also a Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Certified Producer. This is a voluntary federal program that ensures the humane raising of animals.
Kim and Dave are passionate about their animals and proud of their ranch. They are proud of the mutually beneficial system that the cows and rangeland maintain. The cows help keep weeds down in fallow fields while also fertilizing the land. They are also proud of the meats they sell. Kim’s favorite thing about selling at the market is talking with people. She loves to explain why they do things the way they do and educate people about where their food comes from.
