History
The Prescott Farmers Market
began in 1997, behind the Chamber of Commerce with just a few farmers
and a whole lot of energy and enthusiasm. The market then moved
to Goodwin Street, right on the square. More farmers and vendors
began participating and more and more customers became regulars
at the market. In 2001 the market moved around the corner to Cortez
Street. The City of Prescott, providing a space for the farmers
market to operate, has been an enormous support. In 2005 the market
made its new home at Yavapai College, providing wonderful fresh
food for the local community and a meeting place for everyone from
college students to families to seniors. Partnering with Yavapai
College is a win-win situation. Institutional support, plenty
of parking, and a shared vision to serve the community are some
of the reasons that this is a good match. With lots of local
products to choose from, special events, cooking demos and kids
activities, the Prescott Farmers Market strives to bring community
together and provide all that's local and fresh.
Since its inception, the
Prescott Farmers Market has been dedicated to supporting local agriculture.
Farmers and producers are only accepted Arizona and all products
sold at the market are produced by the seller. The market inspects
all farms and production facilities to ensure the integrity of our
"grower only" market.
Organization
The Prescott Farmers Market,
Inc., is a non-profit, farmers' cooperative organization run by
a Board of Directors. Board members are elected for three year terms
by members of the Prescott Farmers Market. Please read the Bylaws
of the Prescott Farmers Market for more information on what constitutes
a member and how the Board functions. Board meetings of the Prescott
Farmers Market are open. If you are interested in becoming
a board member, send a letter of interest (look under Conctact Us
for address and email). Elections are held in November each year.
Volunteering
Many of the farmers and
producers of the market, along with some very invested community
members, spend enormous amounts of time to organize and grow the
Prescott Farmers Market. The market is always looking for volunteers
in a number of different capacities from helping the vendors sell,
to advertising, to staffing the information table. If you love the
Farmers Market, consider becoming a Friend of the Prescott Farmers
Market.
If you would like to be informed of board
meeting times, attend a meeting, become a "Friend" or
you would like to volunteer, email
the manager or call 928-713-1227.
